Concerning
health

Nowadays, this fruit, which crossed the seas of the Indian Ocean, is indispensable when low temperatures begin to intensify. The orange represents a source of wealth and provides us with an endless number of vitamins necessary for our health, strengthens the general defences of our body, improves wound healing, relieves the gums when they bleed, is excellent for combatting circulatory problems, and its consumption is really positive for type 1 diabetics, since the consumption of oranges prevents hypoglycaemia. In addition, the National Cancer Institute of the United States has attributed the reduction of stomach cancers in recent years to the consumption of orange juice in that country.

Its caloric intake is hardly noticed, since one orange contains only 70 calories, and its consumption facilitates the metabolisation of fats and reduces cholesterol levels.

A medium orange or a glass of juice cover practically 100% of vitamin C recommendations, which are 60 milligrams for an adult.

However, there are situations that increase the requirements of this nutrient: smoking, alcoholism, taking certain medications, pregnancy and breastfeeding, stress, decreased defences, intense sports practice, cancer, AIDS, infectious diseases and chronic inflammations, such as rheumatism. In these cases, daily consumption of oranges is particularly recommended. And for the rest of the population, eating them can bring more benefits during the winter months and changes in season when ups and downs in the defence system are frequent and you are prone to catch colds or infections. Its consumption is not recommended in case of diarrhoea and other gastrointestinal disorders, kidney disease and cancer. Nutritional value (per 100 g of edible portion).
